Papersky #28 New Zealand
Walk On!
With established and adventurous Japanese photographer Naoki Ishikawa we headed to New Zealand and spent two weeks trekking, hiking, walking, running and strolling all over New Zealand. We ventured down to Mount Cook, where Sir Edmund Hillary trained becoming the first human to successfully climb Mount Everest. On our way, our eyes star gazed towards the the heavens in the small town of Tekapo. Then from the stars we returned to heaven on Earth as we smelled our way to the Garden City, Christ Church. We soon found ourselves on the North Island where our first stop was Wellington where we did quite well strolling about galleries, cafes, restaurants and the like. Once rested, we flew on a small propeller plane up to Rotorua, a town with one of the largest Maori populations in the country. One of the highlights of this trip was definitely Waipoua, another location sacred to the Maori people for its giant Kauri Trees- fatter than four elephants stuffed together, higher than most birds can fly and dating back two to three thousand years. This issue also includes exclusive photos from Ishikawa’s first photo book The Void (published by us at KHMJ), an intense set of eleven on-foot guides all across the islands (Hot Spring Walk, Wine Walk, Star Walk, Art Walk, et al.), a look at New Zealand considering the Maori and Forest perspectives, an exclusive interview with the late-yet-forever acclaimed Japanese Beat poet Nanao Sasaki as well as our maps and an extra guide on how to find New Zealand in Tokyo. Also: Waipoua, Rotorua, Coromandel, Waiheke Island, Whirinaki, Kerosene Creek, Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, Wellington, Christ Church, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook and from Japan: Dog Sledding in Hokkaido and a look at the World Heritage site Shirakawago, Gifu. We’ve also included a ‘First Trip’ to Patzcuaro, Mexico and our regular columns and a whole lot more into over 130 pages.
